Long conversations
Goal: keep a long conversation small enough to fit in a prompt, with the newest turns word for word and the older ones already summarised.
You need Taisce running, plus TAISCE_URL, TOKEN and the Python client from
Before you start.
How it works, briefly
A history grows without limit, and a context window does not. So, in the background and after turns have formed, the worker rolls each person's history up:
- the newest eight turns stay word for word;
- every run of eight older turns becomes one summary, called a segment;
- every run of eight segments becomes a summary of summaries, and so on.
POST /v1/contexts then hands you one person's history under a size limit: the segments for the
older part, and the newest turns as they were said. Reading a context never calls a model; the
summaries were written earlier, by the same model that forms facts.
1. Write a long history for Sam
Sixteen turns: enough for the oldest eight to become a segment while the newest eight stay as they are.

When the wait returns, all sixteen turns have formed. A real conversation works the same way: one turn per exchange, as it happens.

You should see one segment standing in for the oldest eight turns, then the newest eight as they were said (trimmed):

What each part means:
segmentsare summaries, oldest first.from_offsetandto_offsetare the range of turns a segment stands in for, andlevelis1for a summary of turns and higher for a summary of summaries.turnsare the newest turns, oldest first, with every message and its role.watermarkis the same pair of numbers as freshness, so you know what the context cannot include yet.charactersis what the context cost againstmax_characters, andtruncatedsays whether it had to be cut, from the oldest end.
If segments is empty, the worker has not summarised this history yet. You still get the older
turns, word for word, cut from the oldest end if they do not fit. Ask again a little later.
3. Put it in the prompt
Replace the old history in your prompt with one message built from the context. Keep your system message and the person's new message as they are:

Two rules keep this safe. Do not rewrite the context in your own words, because the summaries and turns are already what memory holds. And do not save the context message back to Taisce with the next turn: it is memory, not something Sam said. The adapters do exactly this when your framework's history gets too long.
4. Choose the size
max_characters counts Unicode characters of message and summary text. It does not count tokens, so
convert to your model's tokens yourself. Leave it out to use the server's own limit. Asking for
more than the server's limit, or leaving out data_subject_id, gets 400:

A context is always one person's history. A subject Taisce knows nothing about gets an empty context, not an error.
